"A house has many doors. Doors can be opened and closed. What is it that remains unseen? My photographs layer what is open and closed, seen and unseen into a single exposure. However, colonization is all about splitting things apart. Us or them. This or that. Alive or dead. Colonization created the binary of traditional and modern so that subjugated cultures are frozen in time. A culture that cannot create new traditions will die. What is considered authentic is defined by the colonizers. I aim to create photographs that are explicitly inauthentic in documenting a single moment in time. Attempts at an authentic depiction of our home lives will always leave something unseen, behind a closed door. Only by embracing what is not seen, can we understand what we don't know."
